With coming of information era and developing of information technology, mobile phones develop rapidly in recent years. It is obbligato and all-important for college students because of its convenience and recreational facilities. Inevitably, Professor Wong finds that her students often fiddle with their mobile phones in class. So how could Professor Wong make students focus on their lectures rather than mobile phones?
To begin with positive reinforcement, Professor Wong can make some awards to draw students’ attention. For example, students who answer questions correctly can get awarded marks in their daily work, or they will have less homework after class because teacher has already understood his or her opinion during lecture. And teachers should encourage students to express their own viewpoints fearlessly and create an exoteric and enlightened atmosphere (Joseph Stookey, Jeffrey Rushen, 2014). Teachers also should try to change teaching style and make class interesting and neoteric so that students will pay closer attention to their lecture.
Next, teachers also can take actions in negative reinforcement. Teachers can tell their students the disadvantages of playing mobile phones during lecture obviously. It will make them abstracted; the addiction of mobile phones can occupy their precious time and do harm on their health. And some banners with slogan that playing mobile phone in class is forbidden also can make a difference with its warning role. Even teacher can ask for students to hand in their mobile phones before class. It is a bit compulsive but very effective.
What’s more, teacher can put his or her hand to attract students’ attention to their lecture from positive punishment that is to decrease frequency through an unsavory stimulation (Jo Hockenhull, Emma Creighton, 2013). If there is a student who is found to play mobile phone during lecture, the teacher shall ask him to retell what the teacher has just said. Under the circumstance, the student usually cannot do it, so teacher can criticize this phenomenon and punish the student, such as make deduction in his daily work. Then teacher should emphasize the harm of playing mobile phones in class thereby put an end to the phenomenon.
The last but not least, teacher can deal with the circumstance by using negative punishment that is to decrease frequency through withdrawing a favorite stimulation. For example, teacher can add some music and videos to the lecture in order to make it more interesting. But if there is student who is found to play mobile phone, the planned music and video will be cancelled. Thereby there must be some students who are eager to enjoy the planned pleasure and want to know more about the class to complain the student who plays mobile phone in class. And the student will feel regretful and guilty so that the frequency will be decreased.
In conclusion, Professor can decrease the phenomenon that students play mobile phones in class in the four ways to promote the efficiency of lecture and students’ performance.
