Introduction
This essay is mainly a critique on the research design and data analysis of The Quantitative Approaches in Business Studies. As a critique is both objective and personal (Marczyk& DeMatteo& Festinger, 2010), certain criteria will be used to evaluate the journal while in the meantime, some personal opinions and reactions will be included. In this article, a brief overview will be attached at the beginning, and then follows the critique on the research design and data analysis of this thesis. What’s more, the critique will make up the most important part of this article.
 
Overview of the thesis
This thesis is titled “The Quantitative Approaches in Business Studies”. It was written by Morris Clare. It was written to explore the relations of some business factors. In this thesis, proper research design is adopted and   many data analysis methods are applied. The main purpose of this report is concerned about the critique on the research design and data analysis. 
Critique on research design
To make a critique on the research design, we have to first know what a research design is. In brief, research design consists of four parts, blueprint, plan, guide and framework. To illustrate it in great detail, research design is the blueprint which authors use to fulfill their research objectives and answer various questions. It has many essentials, which may become the fundamental criteria of this critique by which we evaluate this essay. 
(1). A research design should have an activity and time-based plan. The activity is a very important part of the research design (Bynner& Stribley 2010), for all the analysis will be conducted on its basis, and all the conclusions will be drawn from it. As we can see from the theses, the activity was carefully selected and organized, which paved the way for a successful theses. 
(2). The plan of the research design should be based on the research questions. This is easily understood. Each plan should be made based on the research questions so that it can better serve the research purposes. In this thesis, the plan is just made properly according to the purpose of research which made it a successful plan.
(3).there should be a guide for selecting sources and types of information. A lot of information and data collection instruments can be adapted, for instance questionnaire and interview and on the spot surveys, just to list a few examples.  This adaption of instruments should be considered in a way that can approach the cases of the research design (Mitchell& Jolley, 2012). What’s more, the various data analysis tools may be adopted. Among the can-be-selected ones are statistical analysis, sigma data analysis, panel data analysis, primary data analysis, and mathematical statistics and data analysis. In this thesis, these data analysis tools are adopted and will be discussed one by one in the second part of the main body. 
(4). A framework for specifying the relationships among the study’s variables should be offered in the thesis. This only makes up a very small part of the thesis, but it is essential. 
(5). There must be a procedural outline for every research activity (Berthold& Hand, 2007). In this thesis, the outline is introduced in the introduction part, which make it very clear to the readers what it is in this thesis. This helps to make it more efficient for both the authors and readers. 
Actually, there are also a lot of essentials to a research design from the descriptors point. They are: question crystallization, data collection method, researchers’ effects, purpose of study, time dimension, topical scope, research environment, and perceptual awareness. This thesis mainly concentrated on purpose study, data collection method, time dimension parts. And to have a overview of it, we can tell that the researcher intensively examines several units, the persons, the groups and the organizations (Vogt& Gardner& Haeffele, 2012). What’s more, data are often collected by multiples means in this thesis. One more characteristic is that the researcher set the cases in natural settings. But disadvantages are that there are no experimental or statistical controls in this thesis. 
 
Critique on data analysis
There are several important steps for data collection and data analysis. They are: identify research questions/hypothesis, a literature review on what has been published, search for potential data system, read the documents, compare data systems,  find out whether the data can help you to answer the questions, find out whether data systems are available on public domain, need be requested, or need to be collected in a survey, data analysis, results interpretation, and dissemination of findings. 
1. Principle Component Analysis
Principal component analysis (PCA) is a method to statistically explore the graphical description of the information present in large datasets. In most cases, researchers study p variables measured on n individuals, especially when the two variables are very large (Govaert, 2010). In this case, the aim of statistical analysis is to find out the similarities of the huge quantity of information and categorize them into an easy and understandable form.  The researcher applied this method in this thesis as we can see from the many graphs and the conclusions drawn from them.
